Students were initially motivated and bonded together into teams through a sense of commonality gained from the knowledge of sharing equally varied heritages in a much larger world with fascinating similarities and yet stark underlying differences. Constantly motivated by the question 'Why?' as their guiding principle, they were facilitated through the process of Ownership, Leadership, Relevance, Self-direction, Creativity, Cognition and Autonomy in their research, allowing for variance in learner populations ranging from basic to gifted.
The content was designed with multi-point connectivity in mind, expanding the scope for learners at the lowest level to find entry into the project as well as for ones at the high end of the spectrum to challenge themselves continuously according to their cognitive levels. Ultimately, the students connected to this project because it gave them a sense of their place in a much larger world, a purpose in being able to effect change, feeling of autonomy in guiding their projects within a supportive and constantly creative team environment, and a deeper and tangible understanding of the world. And not least, because they found it interesting, enjoyable and challenging at the same time.
Connections were made through diverse sets of points, such as language, heritage, art, sciences, cultures, sports, politics and economy, built out of one central topic in their school curriculum- location in the world! The final culmination event for the project was an exciting presentation that in itself evolved and pushed the boundaries of their thinking, as they came together as teams of equals to explain their combined thoughts and reasoning about their new country in the world to expert panels.
